Leon Scott
Leon Scott earned his bachelors, masters and doctorate from Emory University in English. He taught first at Roswell High School in Fulton County, GA; then he went to Briarcliff High in Dekalb County where he taught the Advanced English classes and coached football, wrestling and baseball, as well as served as the Senior Class Advisor for a class of four hundred. At the end of his third year at Briarcliff, the School Yearbook was dedicated to him. His wrestling teams won three consecutive State Championships.
At this point in Leon's career, he was offered a teaching and coaching position at The Westminster Schools.
His Westminster career spanned thirty-five years as English Teacher, Coach and Counselor. He was a three-time STAR Teacher for the City of Atlanta, and in 1973 was the Georgia Coach of the Year in Wrestling. He was a Reader for the College Board Advanced Placement Examination in English. For his last twenty years at Westminster, he was the College Counselor for boys. He has published scholarly articles on Robert Penn Warren and William Faulkner and currently contributes articles to several hunting and fishing popular magazines. After retiring from Westminster Leon became a Reader for the Office of Undergraduate Admissions at Georgia Tech.
For decades Leon has been both a competitive shooter and avid hunter. For fifty years Leon has served as a Marksmanship Instructor teaching over 4,000 students shooting skills and safe gun handling. He was the subject of a feature article in Georgia Sportsmen magazine, and a deer he took in Oklahoma earned him photo inclusion in North American Whitetail magazine.
Leon joined Beach Week in 1995 and taught Critical Reading until Beach Week 2008. This summer he and Linda will co-lead Essay Revision. Recently he and his bride celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on a Caribbean cruise with their family!
