My Educational Horizons

Expanding your academic horizons

“BEACH WEEK”

You want your student to spend the summer assiduously readying for the college admission process, so that he/she can get into the best college possible. Your student, on the other hand, wants to spend summer as far away from school "chores" as possible. Sound familiar? Linda encountered this dilemma in 1994, and was struck with a brilliant idea to satisfy both constituents - an experiential learning adventure called Expanding Horizons: The College Admission Seminar, located on the picturesque North Carolina coast.  That summer 9 rising high school seniors hailed from Iowa, Georgia, Maryland, and North Carolina.  Students spent one week living together as a family while Linda facilitated sessions on SAT Preparation, How to Choose a College, THE Essay, Student Rights and Responsibilities, and the Application Process. It was a hit! Who would have ever thought that the response to "Where did you get that tan?" would be "SAT  Camp"!

Since that successful experience Linda has continued to provide the opportunity for students to expand their horizons annually each summer.  Her staff has grown to include admission officials, as well as SAT preparation teachers. Seminar topics embrace sessions on SAT Preparation, How to Write the College Essay, The Interview Process, How to Get the Most from a College Visit, NACAC Statement of Principles of Good Practice, Stress Management, Completing the Application, What Counts with the College Admission Committee, and others. Participants have affectionately dubbed this as Beach Week.

Supervision is by our staff of 7 professionals who also enjoy cooking for a crowd!  The spacious duplex where we lodge at beautiful Emerald Isle can accommodate 12 rising high school juniors and seniors who are serious about combining a week of hard work in preparation for the ever-changing college admission process with fun in the sun and surf. We intentionally keep the seminar size small so that students can receive individualized attention; this means that they are accountable for their learning.  The outcome of the seminar for your student is directly related to the level of effort exerted as a participant.

Our work sessions are interactive, our food is good, and our dress code is beach casual. There are periods of free time when one can take a leisurely stroll across the dunes to the ocean, enjoy some snacks from the kitchen, relax with participants on one of the large decks, or even take a tranquil nap.  Staff members are always available for extra "one-on-one" help.

Your student will depart with a bigger vocabulary (You might have to buy a dictionary to keep up!), a stronger understanding of the college admissions process, and new friends from all over the country. How do we know it works?  Families who have lived our mission continue to be our best referral source!  For more information, or to ask any questions, feel free to contact Linda directly. Beach Week 2008 will occur the week of June 29 - July 5
